- Identify the enemy
- Devise ways to defeat him
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is best seen as a School of Political Warfare. The Center’s mission is to defend free societies which are under attack from enemies within and without, both secular and religious. The Center’s focus and the School’s curriculum have two agendas:
1. Identify the enemy and understand his nature
2. Devise ways to attack and neutralize him
To identify the enemies of America and free societies generally, the Center has created a unique online encyclopedia of the Left providing profiles of leftist organizations and individuals, and providing explanations of their over-arching sinister agendas, which are often concealed behind universally appealing values such as peace and justice. The encyclopedia is accessible at www.DiscovertheNetworks.org and has been an indispensable source for scores of books - including Stanley Kurtz’s definitive portrait of Obama’s radicalism, Radical in Chief, and Aaron Klein’s The Manchurian President - and thousands of articles. It has been a much-used source for Fox News Channel producers and has been a palpable influence on the rightward shift of the O’Reilly Factor on key issues like race.
Robert Spencer is one of the leading experts on jihadist Islam. He has written 10 books on the subject and heads Jihad Watch, a flagship program of the Center. Caroline Glick is a reporter for the Jerusalem Post and the foremost conservative analyst of the conflict in the Middle East. She heads the Center’s Israel Security Project. Dr. Jamie Glazov edits frontpagemag.com which features the work of Daniel Greenfield, one of the boldest and most insightful writers on both the Islamist and domestic threats. FrontPage features some of the best conservative authors who daily offer a wealth of information on the war at home and abroad. Film writer Mark Tapson manages TruthRevolt, a Center site that attracts 2.5 million visitors a month and introduces them to a battle many are not yet aware of.
In the Art of Political War and Take No Prisoners, David Horowitz offers a strategy for fighting and neutralizing the leftist assault, a formula which is reflected in the subjects and style of the articles on FrontPage, whose motto is: “Inside every liberal is a totalitarian screaming to get out.” Thus all of the Center’s multiple websites and programs are vehicles for identifying the enemy and understanding his nature, and developing ways to fight back.
The Center’s role is essential because most organizations on the right describe America’s adversaries as “secular humanists,” “progressive humanists,” “statists,” and, most frequently, “liberals.” In addition to being grossly inadequate—and, in the case of “liberal,” accepting the Left’s propaganda term for itself-- these designations share the mistaken assumption that America’s adversaries are simply people, however radical, who disagree about policies but remain patriotic Americans committed to its constitutional framework. None of the above designations explains the basic nature of the Left as a missionary force seeking to destroy America’s social contract in order to remake the world and the individuals who inhabit it. Without this understanding it is impossible to explain how Americans, whatever their policy views, could collaborate with America’s enemies beginning with the communist totalitarians of the Cold War and extending now to the Islamist barbarians seeking the destruction of Israel and the United States.
None of the above designations—certainly not “liberal”—can explain what binds Islam and leftism in an unholy alliance against Israel, America, and the West. The Center has provided such an explanation in millions of published words and hundreds of public events over the past three decades. Through books like Unholy Alliance, The Black Book of the American Left and The Art of Political War, the Center has provided a battle plan on how to fight this ever-expanding, evermore destructive Left.
In the nine volumes of The Black Book of the American Left, comprised of his conservative writings over the past 25 years, David Horowitz provides a picture of the rough beast that has been growing ever more aggressive as it has slouched toward hegemony in America for the past five decades: “After the convention riot of 1968, this neo-Communist Left marched off the streets and into the Democratic Party, and over the next decades took commanding positions in the party’s congressional apparatus, and eventually its national leadership. As it acquired power, it gradually shifted its self-identification from “liberal,” which it stole from the honorable figures it expelled from the Democratic Party after its 1972 takeover, to the bolder label “progressive,” a designation shared by most leaders of the Democratic Party today. The betrayal of the Vietnamese by the “Watergate” Democrats, the appeasement of Latin American Communists (now firmly entrenched throughout the hemisphere and allied with our enemy Iran), the betrayal of the Iraqis and the sabotage of the war on terror, the traducing of the civil-rights movement and its transformation into a mob led by racial extortionists Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton (the latter now the president’s chief adviser on race), the subversion of the modern research university and the conversion of its liberal-arts divisions into doctrinal institutes for training American youth in the radical party line known as political correctness, the rise of a campus fascism aligned with Islamic Jew-haters and genocidal terrorists, the political undermining of the public-health system during the AIDS epidemic which led to half a million avoidable deaths — all these were crucial battles lost during the 40 years that preceded and led up to the reign of Barack Obama.”
It is because of this permanent war that the Left has waged against America—a war that seems to have reached a tipping point with the Left’s capture of the Oval Office as embodied in the current president’s effort to “fundamentally transform America” and give nuclear weapons to its mortal enemy—that the Freedom Center came into being nearly three decades ago. It is to educate Americans on who the troops of the Left are, what they want, and what their plan of battle is that the Center has made itself into a School of Political Warfare during these years. Its mission is to teach conservatives the art of political war, and to help them put an army into the field to engage in the battle they never asked for but now must learn to fight to victory. For eight years the Center has waged campaigns on college campuses in the form of hundreds of campus “Teach-Ins,” to raise awareness of the threat of Islamo-Fascism, and the genocidal assault on the state of Israel. Its “Stop the Jihad on Campus campaign,” identifies the campus agents of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood which are spearheading the genocidal propaganda campaigns of Hamas. The Center is the only conservative institution willing to take on these agents directly and expose them as a terror front present on hundreds of American campuses.
The Left that is now building on its occupation of the White House is not motivated by simple differences over policy or by what some conservatives persist in seeing as a “misguided idealism.” Its intention is to destroy the constitutional foundations of American democracy, dismantle traditional American governance and replace traditional American values with the socialist ideals that underpin the structures of totalitarian states. The Left cannot be dissuaded from its course by argumentation, however cogent and convincing it might be. It can only be stopped by a political counterforce that understands the threat it poses and is equipped with strategies to defeat it. The Center exists as a School of Political Warfare to educate that counterforce and provide American patriots with the weapons required to achieve this defeat of the Left.
